Gabon: Kidnapping and sequestration of trade unionist Jean Remy YAMA
Communiqué  Posté le 28-02-2022 10:20, modifié le 28-02-2022 15:21 par Tournons la Page

Gabonese civil society organizations, members of the international coalition Tournons La Page, launched the campaign against arbitrary arrests in July 2020. This campaign aims to sensitize the Gabonese authorities, who are committed to improving the human rights situation in our country, to respect the legal procedures of arrest and incarceration. We regret to note that, more than a year after the launch of our campaign, the bad practices of abduction and forced disappearances continue. Many citizens, both anonymous and public figures, continue to be subjected to these practices from another age.

As proof, this Sunday, February 27, 2022, we learned with amazement, the sequestration of Mr. Jean Remy YAMA by the services of the B2.

According to corroborating sources, President Jean Remy YAMA was arrested at Libreville airport as he was about to take his flight to Senegal for a medical check-up, and then driven to an unknown destination.

With major elections just a few months away, the preservation of a peaceful environment is an absolute priority for our nation.

Therefore, our organizations call once again to turn the page of these antidemocratic practices consisting in preventing opinion leaders carrying social demands from enjoying their civil rights, notably the rights to free movement, access to health care and fair justice, civil rights of which Mr. Jean Rémy YAMA is today abusively deprived by the Government of the Gabonese Republic.

We call for the immediate release of union leader Jean Remy YAMA and call on national and international opinion to bear witness to this umpteenth case of arbitrary arrest in a country that sits on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
